Little Steidl at the ICA Los Angeles

Little Steidl at the ICA Los Angeles

23 July 2022 – 21 January 2023
1717 E. 7th Street in Downtown Los Angeles

Opening book talk and reception: Saturday, 23 July, 2-5pm
with Nina Holland, director of Little Steidl; Greg Colson, artist; and Glenn Phillips, Senior Curator at the Getty Research Institute

Little Steidl books will be featured at the ICA LA in downtown Los Angeles for a six-month Bookshelf Residency. The Annex will be filled with process materials from the Little Steidl workshop in Göttingen, Germany: printing plates, proofs, maquettes, and video, revealing the intricacies of the printing and bookmaking process. The project features collaborations with Lawrence Weiner, Greg Colson, and Anthony Wilson, and introduces the work of iconic German photographer Jan von Holleben to a Los Angeles audience.

Two new books will be previewed at the opening: Greg Colson’s 14 Day Juice Challenge, first in a series that will survey the artist’s career, and The Blueberry Machine, a children’s book by Jan von Holleben and Monte Packham that celebrates the creative relationship between human being and machine.

Bilderbuchkunst: Das Buch als künstlerisches Medium
Picture Book Art: The Book as Artistic Medium

12 October 2023 – 5 March 2023
MAK Museum für angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Art), Vienna

Bilderbuchkunst draws from the magnificent collection of Friedrich C. Heller to consider the varied practices of artists from the 1960s to the present around one of the most fundamental genres in bookmaking: the picture book. The vibrant 2017 edition of Lawrence Weiner’s SOMETHING TO PUT SOMETHING ON is featured in the exhibition and available at the MAK Design Store. Along with a selection of process materials from the print run, the 2017 edition will also take a place in MAK’s Library and Works on Paper Collection.
